When am I not a newbie?
I've been making knives for two years. Am I still a newbie? Should I post pictures of my knifes here?
I've bookmarked the newbies forum and come by here every few days to see what's up. My thinking is that one day, (gasp), I will no longer be a newbie. However, the more I learn about knifemaking, the more I realize I am a toddler among the elders. When am I not a newbie? If it don't matter, I'll post my latest knife... 9 inches overall, CPM 154 - 1/8" with 416 Stainless bolsters, sugilite gemstone (purple) composite, vulcanized black fiber spacers and stabilized California Redwood burl. Something that was inspired a little by Ray's Shop Built Chef's Knife video. Thanks! Dan |

When a fella is making knives that look like this, whether it's single digits or triple, he's not a newb...

Good question. If you were in the ABS, you'd test. If you are like me, then your not taking part in that. I suppose if one can make a blade that can do what it is supposed to do and look good while it does it then you aren't a newb. For the record, I still consider myself a newb.

When you can make pretty much any knife you want to then you've left 'newbie' pretty far behind. But, that doesn't mean you can post your knives here, anybody can post here. And, that's part of the point of this forum: the newbies get to see the work of the people who were newbies themselves once upon a time and that's how we learn. As long as you are willing to share your knowledge anyone is welcome here .
Nice work on that knife. I'm glad to see that you were able to use that video as I intended by applying what I did on a chef's knife to a different style of knife. Most any technique can be used on most any style of knife.... |

I think as long as you are making knives you will be a newbie about some aspect of knifemaking. As you explore different handle treatments and different steels, different guard treatments and "how the heck did he do that?" I am going to try that. When you decide to try making folders or swords, daggers or kris. there will always be an aspect of newbie to knifemaking. As you find you are answering more questions than you are asking you become an accomplished newbie.

Dan,
I wish that there was an answer for your question but it's such a subjective term that just isn't a good one. The number of knives that I have made totals somewhere in the thousands but to some I may still be a newbe. No matter what the answer to the question is, please continue to post pics of your work as all of us enjoy seeing the work of others. When you get to the age of some of us......you kind of start out each day as a newbie.
Well spoken Steve. I often look in the mirror and ask myself "how'd I do that?"
