lining a coal forge

I have a old portable rivet forge I need to line with something so I picked up a bag of fire clay anyone here give me any tips on how to mix and how thick of a coating I need to apply ? thanks for any help

The folks I know with rivet forges never line theirs. clinkers stick tot the clay. But since you have it already, a couple inches should work

LH, don't mix it to thin, or it'll crack pretty bad as it's drying. I'd say something like peanut butter, then trowel it in the bottom, and "funnel" down to the grate. If I remember correctly, the rivet forges don't have clinker breakers, but do have a ash dump. Should make you a good forge.
