Rivet dies question

I've now been using my KnifeKits supplied rivetting dies for a short while, and I'm still finding I split the rivets occasionally. The dies are fairly heavily graphited to help encourage the roll, but I can't work out what I'm doing differently between the perfect rivets & the ones that split.

Also, is there a trick to drilling out duff rivets? Understandably, I get the drill partway through & then the rivet starts spinning...

TIA,

Peter

PS,
The trick is to start the rivet with just a little pressure. Then put more pressure on the rivet until it is just seated.
If you go to far it will split.
Also using the right rivet for the thickness of the kydex you are using will cause this problem.
I have never had to take one out so I do not know this answer.
I would practice using scrap pieces until I get the feel for setting the rivets. Once you get it they are really easy to set.

Thanks Darrel - I think you may have hit the nail (rivet?) on the head. I'm using a 2 ton press, and can get a little enthusiastic with it at times. I can feel the first shift of the rivet as the head starts to roll, after that, I think I need to be a little gentler/more cautious.

These are 8-8 rivets on 2 layers of 0.060, so I *think* I'm using the right ones?

I'm wrecking about 1 in 10 at the moment - but the other 9 do look good (even if I do have to touch them up with brass black more often than not).

PS,
I think we found the problem.
The 8-8 is for .08 kydex. They can be used on the .06 but an 8-6 will work better for you .
When you feel that intial roll just go easy from there and they should be fine!

Ah. Yes, that would explain it. The KnifeKits site lists 8-8 as being for 0.06 & 0.08. I see that 6-9 have been added now, too. 8-6 on the horizon?

Is it worth grinding down the rivets a tad? Fiddly, I would imagine. Possibly best if I simply curb my natural enthusiasm for squashing things flat...

As an aside - what do those numbers mean? Head size & rivet length, naturally - but what units?

Peter,
The unit size numbers I do not know.
From experience I just know what goes with what.
The 8-8 will work with the .06 . I think you hit is correct. Just do not over press them!
The 6-9 and 8-9 are for .09 thick kydex.
The 6 size is 3/16 id size .
the 8 is 1/4 inch id.

A brief update -

Now that I'm not trying to use the full force of the press, the rivets aren't splitting any more. Thanks again!

Mind you, the full 2 tons is quite handy for pressing the Kydex beforehand...

Mr. Bond,
Im glad you worked it out and got the right pressure.
It takes a little practice.
