Intro to knife making

Hey, complete novice here. I would like to make a fillet knife for my old man, well, at least the handle and attach a blade. Not sure where to start. I have access to various wood types and have a little woodwork knowlage. ANY help at all would be great.

Cheers

Sounds like you are willing to start with a kit knife. That's fine, many of us started that way. Check out knifekits.com and find yourself a fillet blade you like, some Loveless bolts to attach the handle, some handle material (or use your own), and a sheath if you want one and one is available for the blade you chose. After you look that over you will have questions and we will try to have answers ...

Should be pretty easy as a starter. Recommend looking at a lot of finished fillet knives and get a good feel for what the handle shape should be. Handle a bunch of different styles and think through actions and functions of the knife. Remember these are used in probably one of the most slippery cutting processes known to man. A little over sized and with a built in guard/finger stop is something to consider.
Keep it simple first time around, if the addiction jumps your bones, you can get fancy later.

Mike, you sound just like the dude on the corner at Little Five Points. You don't wear a red velvet hat with gold trim do you?
(He is right Mack......there's no hope once you cross the threshold and get that first taste.)
