scales to re colour or replace ?

Hi guys.

I bought a hand made knife a while ago and i would like to replace the handle or recolour it.
Its currently a blue micarta but id like to change it to od green.

My problem is the guard handle and pommel are glued in and the handle is a solid piece sandwiched between the metalwork

Can the micarta be recoloured whilst attatched or will i need to break the knife down.
If i need to break it down what should i use to dissolve the epoxy ?

Thanks.

You can't change the color of micarta. It is fabric that is dyed all the way through and encased in resin. I don't mean any offense by this, but if you are asking these questions I'm going to assume you don't have any experience with what you're talking about doing and you're getting ready to destroy a nice knife. Even if you had the proper skills from your description of the knife construction it is likely impossible, or at least impractical, to replace the handle. There are lots of nice knife blanks on the market that you can put your handle material of choice on. This may not be what you want to hear, but you are likely to get similar advice from anyone on this forum.

What CB said is correct, you can't change the micarta's color. You can change the handle, but it's not really cost effective.

I agree with the others. The handle could be replaced but success isn't very likely for someone who has never built a knife before because taking that one apart without damaging it is not what you want to try as a first project. You said it's a hand made knife and it sounds to me like the maker filled the handle with epoxy (as he should have) so it's a solid mass right now. The handle could be ground off if you had the skills and the machinery to do it without damaging the tang. Or, if you were able to heat the handle enough to soften the epoxy you might be able to disassemble the handle (but don't let the blade get hot or you'll ruin the temper). And if you could do one of those things and manage to get it all back together and shaped properly it would hardly be cost effective, as Hurley pointed out.

But, the position you find yourself in is very similar to the circumstances that caused many of us to begin making our own knives. Maybe it's time for you to make your first knife ...
