Camp knife with secondary caper
This is a camp knife with sambar stag scales, a 9" CPM 3V blade with an oriental influence, and a 2.25" companion knife that rides in the handle of the big knife. This one was done at a customer's request and as soon as a few final touches are completed it will be headed for NY.
Hope that you like it. |

Nice looking combination Harry. Take a pic of the back of the sheath for me. I am curious how you attached the thong/keeper.

The keeper is an extension of the welt. It is not attached to the back of the sheath, but between the front and back pieces of leather. I have used this arrangement for about 25 years. It works great for knives where there isn't much of a finger guard, because the thong wraps the handle and gets tighter as the knife is pulled. When it is unsnapped, the thong unwraps itself as the knife is pulled out. Whatever finger protection the knife has, keeps the thong from getting cut. Since it is snapped to the rear it is less likely to be unsnapped accidentally by something brushing against it. And since it is on the front edge of the sheath, it is no where near the edge when you are inserting the knife into the sheath, so it is less likely to be cut then.

I like it!
Do you have a similar sheath you can bring to the Guild meeting? I'd like a hands on look at how you do the loop and snap. What keeps the small blade in place in the big handle? Friction, magnet, spring? __________________ Carl Rechsteiner, Bladesmith Georgia Custom Knifemakers Guild, Charter Member Knifemakers Guild, voting member Registered Master Artist - GA Council for the Arts C Rex Custom Knives Blade Show Table 6-H |

Carl I'll bring a couple of sheaths to the Guild meeting. The strap is made kind of backwards to me. You work from the snap end first, leaving the welt end too long. When you are about ready to assemble the sheath, you put the knife in, snap the strap, wrap the handle, and measure where to cut the welt end of the strap.
The little knife is held in with two small, very strong magnets. It takes a deliberate effort to withdraw, so Charlie used the thong on the handle to add a little extra to grab. The edge of the small blade never touches the tang of the big knife. |

Another great piece! I've been toying with the knife in the handle idea myself lately.
good idea that, with the strap. G. __________________ http://ak-adventurer.net/ Gary Blessing, Ex-custom knife maker, Ex-Folder modifier & embelisher. |
