RWL-34 heat treatment

I have cross posted this message in the european forum but had no reply so I thought maybe posting to everyone might get some response.

"Hi everyone!

I've been of the CKD forum for quite some time now due to work etc but am now getting back into knife making.

I have made a lock back folder from RWL-34 but can't find anyone in U.K able or willing to do the heat treatment. Can anyone give me any details of heat treatment companys that might help?

I also have some Damasteel in rose pattern and ladder pattern but don't want to start anymore projects if I can't get it treated.

Hope you can help,

Andy Gascoigne"

Jens Anso uses that steel and he say he sends his to a company called Haustrup in Denmark. Of course, he's in Denmark so I guess that's more convenient for him than it might be for you.

Anyway, I looked up the heat treat info for that steel and it doesn't seem to pose any particular problems. Anyone who can treat ATS-34 or BG-42 or any of the high end stainless steels like that would be able to do it if they had the proper figures.

Heat the steel to 1050 C and hold for 10 - 15 minutes. The steel may then be quenched either in air or in oil. After that, cryo processing is highly recommended. Then temper at 220C for two hours, one time to get Rc 59 or temper 175C for two hours one time to get Rc 62.

Hopefully, there is someone in your neighborhood who can follow those instructions. Good luck ....

Thanks Ray for the info. I had read that Jens uses Haustrop but I can't find any info on them.

I have reall problems in the U.K getting anyone interested in doing H.T on a small scale thats why I posted in the european forum hoping to get some contacts.

I will keep trying and let you know how I get on.

By the way I consider it an honour talking to you, as your web site was the inspiration for me to start making folding knives!!.

I keep checking by your web site and have shown many people your location and the great bears you have around the place.

best regards.

Andy

Andy

I'm sorry you're still having trouble finding someone to do HT on a small scale. I'll talk to my local place, they certainly do D2 and are willing to work on small scale stuff as well as big ....... I'll post again on Monday.

Roger

Thank you for the kind words about my website. I have put a lot of work into it and it's nice to know that it has done somebody some good.

I'll tell the bears you said 'Howdy' ....

I have the RWL-34 heattreated the same as ATS-34....Damasteel goes right in witht the RWL.

Haustrup is very good and have treated knives for makers for 10-12 years I think. Only problem is the minimum starters fee is real high (its the cryo thats a killer in price...) so to get anything heattreated with cryotreatment is going to cost you 200$ or so.....but you can send in 1 kg or 10 kg without much price difference.

I am going to send blades to heattreat within the next week or two. If you liek you could send your blades to me and I will have them done for you. Thats how the makers here in DK do it....collect the blades from 2-4 makers and send together and then split the cost.

send me an email if your interested.
