" Laramie Treaty of 1868"
This treaty designated the Black Hills as part of the Sioux reservation, But after Custer's expedition in 1874, which was supposedly to be locating a place to build a fort, which was
allowed in the treaty, gold was discovered and all bets were off. There were geologists and miners along for the ride, as the country was in an economic depression, and that gold would come in handy-treaty or no treaty. The soldiers were told to look the other way, as thousands of miners poured into the Hills. According to the treaty, the Army was supposed to keep them out,But Grant was under pressure to "open 'er up".When the Indians responded the only way they knew how, the war was on...Custer later paid for his sins in what could best be described as"A target-rich Environment...". __________________ I once complained about having no shoes, until I met a man who had no...guitar |
