Spring temper O-1 without a furnace?
I'm currently working on my first slipjoint knife following Chris Crawford's tutorial. In his tutorial, he uses a torch to draw the spring back to a bright blue. Since I don't have a furnace, I'm going to have to do the same thing. I've seen a couple of posts where people have recommended heating the metal to bright blue three times instead of just once. Is that overkill or is that now the recommended method when using this technique?
Thanks |

No. It may be under kill. 01 requires a higher heat than simple steels when using it for springs. And good luck getting that color just right. With no oven, you really should be working with a simpler steel.

Thanks for the info. I went ahead and used the torch, and heated it until bright blue three times. The knife has been complete for about a week now, and I've opened it and closed it many times while showing it to friends and family and the spring is holding up well.
