Are you talking about rubber cement?

Tandy makes a thinner for it. I've found that once it sets up (as in 'oh crap, I left the lid off the jar overnight') it's pretty hard to restore it. For the most part, rubber cement is pretty cheap.

Acetone or alcohol sparingly.

If I May,

I use Barge all purpose cement to fit up my scabbards. Barge has an all purpose thinner made of Teulene (spelling may be incorrect). Custom boot and shoe makers use this stuff to glue up the vamps and tops for cowboy boots before stitching. I have to constantly thin the glue to get the correct penetration into the leather. I like to deal with " Panhandle Leather" out of Admorila, Texas for the AP Cement. I use a gallon of Cement to a quart of thinner usually.

If I get a tiny bit of cement (glue) on the leather it will not take the dye. A drop of thinner will dissolve the cement and then a little touch up with the dye makes everything good again. The fiebing Dye is water (or alcohol) soluable so you can lighten an area by diluting the dye or in trhe case of wanting a darker edge, just apply full strength to the edge and then the diluted while it is still wet and it dries nice and blended.

I wish you well,

Larry Peterson

toluene is the solvent for Barge cement. Unfortunatly it is also one of the ingredents in making meth so the price has gone from $6.95 a gallon to over $25.00
