made some micarta

Hey folks. Just wanted to share my small accomplishment.

In anticipation of this guy coming back from HT next week, I decided to try my hand at making some micarta.

And I gotta say, I love the result. It is some simple black/gray canvas and 3m fiber resin. This was just a little test strip I cut off the slab I made. Cant wait to make it into a handle!

That does look pretty good. I think I'd call it Gila or maybe Sidewinder....

Ha ha, thanks for the ideas. All of my creative energy seems to come out of my hands. When it comes to naming things, all I end up with is #1... or #2... or the black and grey one.

thats to funny man because I actually made my first batch of micarta yesterday morning!!! I cut off a small piece and it just looks black with some super dark grey lines in it. I used cotton shirts for the fabric.

That would look good with a rattlesnake inlay sheath. Good work!

No fabric stores locally? Wal mart has some around here.

Honestly man you have to take a trip to this city sometime just to understand the lack of anything usefull being available. There is 1 store here that I can buy a 1 inch belt sander at and that is it as far as I have found. Sears in the USA has lots of great tools Sears here has nothing to brag about. Our Acklands Grainger has almost nothing compared to the Grainger in the US. Its depressing man lol but when there are only 1000000 people in the whole province compared to other cities having more then that alone it is understandable I guess. But I will check out walmart thats the 1 place I haven't looked.

Yeah, that would be pretty hard to imagine. I grew up and live around Dallas, so just about everything is available locally. But for some reason, with all of the amenities Dallas offers, I still end up buying just about everything online. No local knife makers supply here, probably a good thing because I would practically live there!

Metall99, TheSlacker,

Oh, you big city boys! You should have a look at Wauconda. The only thing in downtown Wauconda is a post office with two employees, and a restaurant, and they occupy the same building. There is only one traffic light within a 100 mile radius of this place. It's 32 miles to Tonasket or Republic (opposite directions), towns of a couple thousand people where you can find small grocery stores, hardware stores, and barber shops. It's about 65 miles to get to a Wal-Mart. I'm just grateful that UPS can find me, otherwise I'd have to get my supplies by air drop ....

Wow. I'd lose my mind not being close to a Walmart. I need my Walmart.

Slacker, looks good man!

Metal99, I feel your pain. I moved from the US to Asia and I now have to ship most of my supplies around the planet to make knives. Its so hard to find stuff here I couldn't even find cheddar cheese for nearly a year.

For colored canvas you can always dye it yourself. I use natural colored canvas drop cloths and dye it in batches. Works pretty good and its still cheaper than buying it colored by the yard.

AUBE,

In what part of Asia are you living?

SE Asia, namely the Philippines. I'm near the second largest city in the country (Cebu) but shopping here is just....different. I'd have more luck finding yak jerky than a piece of 440c, much less the more exotic steels.

I actually visited here shortly after your documented China trip. Fell in love with the place and ended up moving here a year later. Been here for 2 1/2 years now, and will probably stay 2 more.

A pic I snapped of a local beach. This is what it looks like here outside of the city (the cities are overpopulated/polluted)

I never did get around to making a hydraulic press from that ram I bought from you....its still sitting in Michigan waiting for my return.

I liked yak jerky, brought some back from China. That's a beautiful beach for those that like such things. Sometimes I think I'm the only person in the world who avoids beaches and oceans like the plague. As for that hydraulic ram, it will wait until you're ready to deal with it ...
