9th knife finished

I just want to share this knife; it's the ninth one I've done. I'm still struggling with finish on the blade, but I really like the way the handle came out.

It's 1/8" S30V, about 9.5" OAL, with G10 scales.

What's wrong with the finish on the blade? Looks good to me.

I agree with Doug, I've seen worse looking finishes. What type of electric furnace are you using, or did you send it out for heat treat?

I think it looks very good. Nice contrast with the red and white in the handle.

Thanks everyone! The blade finish is a little random... I couldn't get all the coarser belt scratches out without thinning the edge to nothing. I had the heat treat done by Paul Bos; I was really happy with the results: clean, no warping.

This is the second knife I've done in S30V - seems to hold an edge pretty well.

Nice knife man! I'm curious, what are those pins made of?

nice , well done , I really like the design template........care to elaborate on your handle process ?
1000 ways to skin a cat..........and we are always interested in other ways or how to's....
are you assembling a block and then cutting down the middle ?
or are you doing 1 side at a time , internal pins ? just epoxy ?

look forward to your next piece
Rob

The pins are black Micarta rod stock. There is a faint line visible around the 1/4" pins because I had to re-drill the holes a little oversize with an F drill after doing most of the handle shaping with temporary wood dowel pins in place... I think the drill, entering from the "finish" side of the scale, caused some slight delamination of the G10 just beneath the surface. Under a microscope, I can see that the line is not on the surface. Oh well, lessons learned! Next time I'll leave a little more material in my initial shaping before epoxying the scales to the tang.

Hi Rob - I built up the scales one side at a time. Basically, I grind the "front" face of both scales double-side taped or pinned together so they are the same on both sides, then I assemble the stripes, epoxy the stripes to the scales, then finally epoxy the bolster pieces in front of that.

I guess the actual "last step" in this case was to epoxy both scales onto the liner material, which was built up from layers of black and white 0.030" G10.
