New Lighting set up

I thought I would let you guys see what happens when I read a camera instruction book. For a couple of years now I have been using my D70 on a tripod, a pair of work lights, and my white board/ tracing paper light box. Lights are OK, but I have to shoot at c. 1/4 sec to get depth of field and low iso.

For 3 years now I have had an SB800 flash gun, and just the other day whilst reading the manuals of both the camera and flash I worked out how to trigger the flash remotely.

This means I can mount my Flash on a tripod inplace of my work lights at the back of the light box. The camera is manually set to 1/250 and f22, so no tripod and more flexibility. Flash is triggered wirelessly with the camera in commander mode ..... a couple of test shots to get the position of the flash right and he presto ..... a very versatile lighting set up I have had for over 2 years and didn't know .... next time I'll read the instructions straight away!

This is my first attempt with this set up ... 10 mins and 6 shots, 1 hour in Elements 3. Not being tied to a tripos speeds things up without a doubt.

Cheers,

Stephen

Beautiful as always, Stephen. Yes, that's what I have been doing for a few years now. The flash allows a MUCH faster shutter speed, and I'm still able to fall in the middle of the f-stop range. Shooting without a tripod would seem like a no-no, but once you start producing a lot of images, it is a blessing.

Good for YOU!

Coop

That's smart, Stephen - and the result speaks for itself. I guess I need to work harder at learning how to effectively control the flashes (I have two - master and slave) and then maybe I can wean myself from the tripod and hot lites. Really I should make the effort to get comfortable easily going from one method to the other. I do add the flashes to the hot lites (soft boxes) from time to time and that has worked when I've needed it to. The thing that keeps me tied to the pod and hot lites is my affection for shooting multiple exposures without moving the camera, then creatively blending them in photoshop. Still, I realize using the flashes (strobes - whatever) and losing the tripod allows another aspect of creativity to come into play. Thanks for bringing this up and providing such an excellent example!

Nice. I have to step up my light set up and redo my light tent - again. It's just to slow and cumbersome right now...(sigh...)
