First completed knife: 1095 with buffalo horn and red/white/black spacers

This is my first knife so go easy. I only had enough horn to end where I did on the knife. I would have liked more horn material to extend it towards the ricasso. Oh well, I learned a lot. I have 9 more knives waiting for handles if I can find the time to do them.

horn looks fine but pins should of been changed to match handle. Nice knife either way.

Personally, I don't think that the scales were too short, I think that the pins were too far forward. The silver color pins look fine to me. Over all, I sure wish that my first knife looked have that good.

RC,

For a first knife, that's not bad at all. But, if that's your first knife why do you have 9 more waiting for handles? Have you done any testing yet? You need to test your first few knives very hard, even break a few of them. If you don't, how do you know that your not wasting time and material building 10 things that look like knives but really aren't? 1095 isn't the easiest steel to get the right heat treatment on so that's another reason you want to do some serious testing.

Consider getting into the KITHs that are currently running, it's a good way to get a handle on this type of issue. So is the Chat Room Sunday night if you can make it (see the Chat Room thread for details) ...

I did not heat treat these myself. I had Paul Bos heat treating do that part for me. He has a RC hardness tester as he does Buck Knives heat treating. He charges by the batch so I completed 10 blanks and sent them off. This is the first one I put a handle on. I plan on field testing them this hunting season. I guess we will see how this goes. I originally had the pins in the right place but the horn material had a void in it so I had to cut it back. It would have looked a lot better with the handle in the correct position.

Thanks Doug, they are brass pins though.

I thought Bos only heat treated air hardening steels.
