Wow - I miss reading the forum for one day and there's all this to respond to!
Kevin, nice knives. I especially like the black palm. It is a favorite wood of mine though it is a tremendous pain to work. I'd also be interested to learn more about this unique locking system you've made. Brett, unique earrings and nice knife. Now let's see some folders. Geno, my prayers are with your wife and you. And I look forward to seeing your new website. Don, thanks for starting this thread. It was pretty quiet around here. I'll make no excuses because I have been working on folders and I've posted a couple on here. Here's the most recent one I've finished. I also finished up a fixed blade knife last weekend which is attached also. Tony |

Tony, as you know, I've seen some of your work. Very nice work it is, too!
Tell us all about this knife. By the way, we used to live in Aberdeen and Havre De Grace.. Aberdeen proving Ground. Last edited by Don Robinson; 12-17-2010 at 12:21 PM. |

Thanks Don. This knife is essentially the same pattern as the one I posted a while back with brown micarta scales except that I shortened it a bit and made the case a little thinner from top to bottom to give it a more streamlined feel. The blade is exactly the same.
It is a liner lock with a 2 5/8" blade and overall length open is 6 1/8". The blade is 3/32" O1 which I heat-treated. The scales are redheart which I home-stabilized using Minwax wood hardener in my very simple home-made vacuum canister using a brake bleeder as the vacuum pump. Bolsters and backspacer are both black paper micarta. The liners are .04 titanium and the backstop pin is 416 stainless. I really like the shiny black of the paper micarta for bolsters. I have some nice buffalo horn that I've thought of using for bolsters, but I'm afraid it might curl up on the edges since you can't pin or screw it down close to the edges for a folder bolster. What do you think - would that really be a problem? Tony |

Years ago I used black water buffalo horn on a knife and just as I had it finished, a large hole appeared.
I still have several pieces for scales. I'll take $500.00 per set of two scales. They're antiques now. First come first served. |

Don't mean to interupt, but I want to thank you all for the prayers.
She is due to see a new specialist right after Christmas, we will know more then. I'll post once we know more, but this is a one time thanks for all who are lifting her/us up. God bless you all. Geno |

Don I'll take that to mean that I should stick with the micarta if I want shiny black stuff that won't come apart.

Craig B. very nice knives!
I actually did finish one recently for a present, but my work out put has been very low lately. I did draw this recently, based loosly on my dad's old KABAR folder. It is beyond my capabilities right now but I'm going to work up to it. First I'll try a two-bladed folder. Any advice on the design is appreciated! |

Thanks Crocket.
I like what you have so far. Looks like the springs might be a little thin at the tangs. Cut one out with extra springs and heat treat a set of springs then you can play with the blades and get it working. With springs that thin (from spine to edge) keep them oversized until you have them heat treated. When you get one working the way you want keep the spare springs as a pattern to shape the others after heat treat. Lots of notes will help keep future knives out of the junk pile. |

New house or new shop? In any event you can build it just the way you want it, and that's good!
One of these days, and it's not going to be real soon, I'm planning to convert an outbuilding that's just used for storage right now to a shop. My basement shop is just too restrictive, not to mention a shortage of electrical outlets! |
