First Hollow Grind Help
This is my first try at Hollow Grind. Everything was going well until I noticed that the tip was thinner than the rest of the blade. I know that's to be expected. I fixed that problem than I noticed that the first inch of the blade looked convex. After trying to fix that now I still have the convex and the tip is .035" and at the plunge is .071. The blade 1084 / .200" thick and has been heat treated. The OAL is 8.25" the edge will be 3.75" Can I do anything to fix the problem or should I just put the handle and edge on it and say lesson learned? Please help me understand what I can do or could have done different? Thanks in advance

It's a little hard for me to tell from the pictures, but I would regrind the blade starting at the grind termination up to the point on the blade where the edge thickness is where you want it. You need to be extremely careful and patient with this. As soon as you get the edge thickness (more or less) uniform along the entire length of the blade, regrind the entire hollow grind with finer grit belts. The intent here is to blend all of your grind passes together and make it look like one uniform grind. Bright light is your friend when inspecting your grinds and it will quickly reveal where corrections need to be made. Hope that helps!

Mike,
That looks pretty fair for a first attempt. All you need is practice. You do want the edge to be the same thickness all the way down the blade. Start with a scribed center line and gradually grind down to it - if you reach the center line all along the edge then the edge will be the same everywhere. Basically, that is what Jon is saying for you to do now but only on the rear part of the blade where the edge is still too thick. As for the convex part, you have to make a decision there on every hollow ground blade. With practice, you can get that hollow in there but that will result in a very thin tip - is that OK for this knife? If not, then it might be better to carry your grind line much closer to the tip so that only the last inch or so tapers in order to create a heavier tip. It just takes practice.... |
