Alright. Well I ordered the steel. I ordered it from New Jersey Steel Baron. I went with 108CS .187" x 2.5" x 48" for $50 shipping included. Seemed very reasonable comparative. With shipping I could get thinner 1084 and 12" lengths at 1.5" width for $17 a cut including shipping. I found a 9" diameter 7" deep tin bucket that I got with some beer glasses for a gift. I use that for my quench bucket.

Little update. Steel should be here in 2 days. Shipped today. I have to take a drive to get a fire brick and the place is only open a single Saturday a month. I picked up some files and supplies today to make a work bench so I can do a little bit of it on the sun porch. I have a small old vise I am going to built to the work bench. I did some fancy math and set my grind at 30 degrees. I have a reference board to keep me on that angle. I'll post pictures when I get it built.

Make sure you get the soft firebricks, and not the hard. The hard are used to line fireplaces, the soft ones are meant for kilns and forges where you want to retain the heat.
30 degrees--do you mean 30 degrees inclusive (15 degrees each side)?
Also, is this anywhere near you? http://www.tillersinternational.org/...ifemaking.html

I thought each side I read it should be closer to 25.

Well I made my work bench. I am going to soak the vise in degreaser. Paint it and give it some new grease. I need some 4" screws. So the plate in the back is 3 5/16" in height. That should give me about a 15 degree grind. After taking the pictures I need to retape my files. I added pictures into a new album. I am having issues attaching photos but they are in my albums.
