Frustration sets in
So I'm trying to finish off my UZKK Kukri style (See, he can be taught!)chopper by putting the "No Zombies" logo on the micarta grips, and......it ain't goin so well.
I did the design digitally, and printed it out on transparency material, then cut the piece out and glued them on, then sealed the whole thing in urathane sealant. But....the edges of the transparency are very obvious, and can be felt in the palm when holding the knife. Even cutting them out with a razor doesn't work. Tried hand painting them on, and that looked awful, and I'm not a bad painter. I'm to the point where I'm going to try sanding down the edges of the transparency with my dremel (Yeah, that'll be easy...) or and just do some fancy filework to liven it up some. Any suggestions for putting color artwork on micarta anyone want to share? (Yes, I'm aware I'm reaching far outside my skill level with this, but how else do you learn?) |

You're probably reaching far outside most everyone's skill set since most of us don't even think about putting art work on our handles. Not that it's a bad idea or can't be done, just that we have no experience doing it (as far as I know). Maybe if youengraved a pocket into the Micarta and set your artwork into the pocket then you might not be able to feel it. However, if you were willing to change the handle to wood, I have seen a process for applying color laser art to wood....

Thanks Ray, you're a peach. Yes, I'm thinking of counter sinking the plastic into the grip. If I had the funds, I'd look into scrimming it into the grips instead. Just had nother idea pop into my noggin, but it popped out again just as fast. Bugger.

I have put logos and such on custom pens I make. instead of using transparency, try using water slide decals. you can pick them up at the local craft store and print them off at home. once you have them printed you can slide them onto your micarta grips and then apply 5 or 6 coats (maybe more) of CA glue. once its all set up you then sand to 1200 with Micro Mesh and wa-la... you have your logo. if you do it right you shouldn't feel the decal at all.
