Video of my new 3 phase motor and variable speed controller

I just posted a video, my still shot camera needs some repairing...I did start the motor up after I shot the video (actually while it was uploading) and I'm gonna have to put my rocket scientist hat on to figure this thing out! It started by showing me how many hertz the motor was using going through it's startup. Think the RPM was 1700 something. Not sure I also got 2 free 1x30's from HF in exchange for my two old ones, picked up some ceramic belts, couple clamps, but I forgot to look around town for some satanite.

Before I forget link is here:

Have a great day or night, whichever applies!

LOL............Sure, I'll get a price quote, but I think I remember him saying it was over a grand, but I might be wrong. Where do you live again Austin? For shipping purposes, sure he'll ask. He's based in MD.

I knew it was coming, the motor is not the problem, the VFD is! Motor cranks right up when you turn it on.

I work with AC industrial VFDs all day long. TECO is a good motor and you should be happy with that setup. You (or your friend) could wire a knob (potentiometer) for quick speed control and then no need to take your gloves off.

Last edited by DanCom; 10-08-2013 at 03:59 AM. Reason: Drive is a TB Woods, not TECO

As far as I can tell, the TB Woods Microdrive takes single phase 120 and converts it to 3 phase in order to power the TECO electric motor. Can't get my friend to help me, he's in MD and I am in GA. The TB Woods has about 14 different parameters I can set for speed, only problem is my friend has appointments all day and I am lost! Youtube was a little help with this, guess I'll go back and pillage some more!

Just got off the phone with my guy in Maryland, he's going to wire a potentiometer to go with that control and ship it to me. Then I have to call him and he'll walk me through hooking it up to the correct terminals, and I'll be in business. For the motor part of the grinder anyhow.

In the meantime, who knows of a site with good pictures and measurements for a grinder using skateboard wheels? I already have a site for a wheel thanks to Ray.

You're lucky you have your friend who can help you with the set up. It probably isn't as bad as it sounds but I hope the new guys who want to jump into VFD on a budget are paying attention.

New guys: if you're trying to buy VFD components on the cheap and don't have somebody around who can help you get it running you could be in for a few headaches. Might be better to wait until you can afford to buy a complete set up from a reputable dealer ...

The skateboard wheels on mine make it wobble but mine were used alot when I got them. The skateboard looked older than me. The measurement should be very close to any grinder with 2 inch wheels. Look into a good drive wheel as well. I'll try to post some helpful links as I find them.
