Liner Lock from existing blade
Ok, I know how to figure out where to drill the detent hole in the blade once the liner is made.
But in this case, I have an existing knife blade with the detent already drilled. There is no existing liner so I'm making a new liner lock for it. Any ideas how to figure out where to drill the detent hole on the new liner? I'm thinking I might have to drill completely THROUGH the blade, then fit the blade to the liner and use the freshly drilled hole in the knife to drill the hole for the detent ball in the liner. Any better ideas? Thanks. __________________ Quality Handmade Custom Knives http://www.RobaldoKnifeWorks.com Sales@RobaldoKnifeWorks.com Last edited by RRobaldo; 10-03-2013 at 10:52 AM. |

That would work, but the blade is probably too hard to drill.

How about making a template/copy first, out of clear plastic, line/match it up with the rest of the handle/blade so you can see/drill an hole right through the plastic. Then turn it over and place on top of the new steel liner that you are going to make.

I have drilled through an hardened blade before, to fit thumbstuds, only a carbide bit done it though.

The idea of drilling all the way through is going to be the least troublesome method. Spend the money and purchase a "Hi-Roc" bit of the correct size for the task. Maybe some folks could do it by making a template.....but I've never been able to make it work.....a fraction of a thousandth off and it doesn't work.

I have bits that can do the job. I just have to take it slowly and keep it well lubed while I drill it.
I was just hoping someone would have some long time maker would have a neat trick they came up with that would work without drilling the blade. I'm not skilled enough to try the clear plastic idea. I'm afraid that even a tiny bit off would make the detent worthless. __________________ Quality Handmade Custom Knives http://www.RobaldoKnifeWorks.com Sales@RobaldoKnifeWorks.com Last edited by RRobaldo; 10-03-2013 at 10:51 AM. |
