Floyd Nichols knife?

Has anyone ever heard of a Nebraska knife maker circa WW2 named Floyd Nichols? My wife is from his home town, and I became aware of his fighting knives several years ago. He made them and gave them to all of the GI's from Butler Co. Ne. I have been looking for one ever since I first saw one in her home town. I am just curious how widely known he is.

I had never heard of him but when I saw this question I did a quick google and had no trouble finding tons of info on him. Apparently, he is very well known in military circles. I found pictures of him and his knives. I only found one for sale and it was $12,000 so I kept my credit card in my pocket....

Several of my wife's family in David City Ne. are on the lookout for Nichols knives, and some in the community still have the ones handed down by veterans. Me, I'm the poor relative who couldn't afford the nickle on the pommel. I couldn't believe how much his knives sell for.

I had never heard of him and I am originally from Nebraska, not too far from where this guy was. I lived in Valley county. A little town called North Loup. Population when I was growing up 480. I think it is now down to 200 something. If you don't farm not a lot to do around there.

As Ray said goggle is your friend! Goggle the name and there is a lot of info on him!

If I capture those three factors in each knife I build, I am assured the knife will become a piece that is used and treasured by its owner!

I know quite a bit about him as well as his more famous brother. I was wanting to know how well known he was in the knife making community. With his knives selling in the thousands of dollars range, I thought he may have had a little more recognition. I frequent the gun and knife shows around the country and I have been an the look-out for a Nichols fighting knife for some time now. I am hoping to find one where the dealer has never heard of Floyd and just has this old knife with a nickle on the pommel.

I never heard of him, but it's a fascinating story. I wonder if there were lots of local machinists/smiths/metal workers who did much the same thing for the men shipping out in their area.

Something like a collection of their stories and their knives would make for a good book, I think.

I saw one of his blades in a magazine many years back and fell in love with it... it was one of the most graceful knives I've ever seen, fully functional yet absolutely beautiful. I ran into a collector several years back that owned one of his knives and was kind enough to send some photos, but that was before the great hard drive crash of 02...

If you can post some images you would make my day. I've seen a total of only two of his knives and would love to see more.

Smile I am graduate of DCHS 1953 and GA Tech 1957

I went through school with Floyd Nichols daughter Ruth. I have a Floyd Nichols knife that he made for my father with my fathers name engraved on the blade, a bone handle and the name NICHOLS on the handle. Also, a leather sheath for the knife. It is one of a kind. Interested party's may contact me via email: davidcity53@gmail.com. I am retired and live in Dawsonville, GA.

To each his own I guess. If I saw one of those pictured knives at a yard sale for 5.00 I would yawn and walk away.

If I didn't know what I was looking at, I would mistake Mr. Nichols' work for something from the middle east--definitely has a Turkish/Persian influence to my eyes.
