Photo of the Day - Chris Reeve Tanto

Did my chores early in the day so I could go play. Critiques and/or random comments are welcome.

The end of the handle un-screws to reveal a water-tight storage area. In keeping with the 'survival' theme I threw in some of my old climbing gear. I don't use it any more because I'm officially retired from 'dangerous outdoor sports.' But there was a time........

The route is "Dreamweaver" on the North side of Mount Meeker in Rocky Mountain National Park, early May of 1994. My crazy partner took this snapshot because, "Nobody will believe us if we don't have pictures." Even with pictures I still don't believe it!

BTW, the knife is not good for anything. Blade is 9 inches, knife is 13 3/4 OAL. It's got a full-thickness spine so it's tough but it's hollow-ground with very little mass toward the tip so it won't chop. There's no belly so it's of no use as a utility or camp knife. Gripping the handle without a glove hurts because of the sharp checkering. When you do even any light chopping it transmits shock and vibration to the hand that is very unpleasant. It's from a limited production run at the Chris Reeve factory and came my way when I didn't know much about knives. Thought I'd get a picture of it and maybe try to trade or sell it somewhere.

Trick Photography!

Hi Buddy!

Don't think for a moment that I was fooled by the shot of you mountain climbing.

Knowing your excellent photographic skills, and your ability to work wonders with Photoshop, it wasn't hard to figure out what the original, untouched image actually shows!

Cheers!

David

This line of Chris Reeve knives has to be expirienced and undersood... since the moment I've taken MK.VI as the only knife for one of my summer sdventures... there is no way back! Awesome knives, and especially MK.VI, Mountaineer II and Ubejane.

Buddy, it's a cool photo, but... my first thought was "why the hell someone tied this knife to the sheath with a lanyard???".

I hadn't noticed but you're right. It does look like that. I was trying to make some of the cord disappear but I should have done that a little differently!

BTW, I think the CR Mountaineer, Sable and a couple of his other designs are much more useful and practical than this one - which is probably why it was a very limited run! I have a small Sebenza and two Mnandis that are extremely nice and competent blades. So, I'm not down on CR per se.

David - Ha! Yeah, lets get out the ice axes, crampons and harnesses - and let's go crawling! I thought you were serious for a moment.

Why did you want to hide the cord? Along with the long barrel-knot it's almost like Chris' trade mark. I'd show it for sure.
