Premade blades

Is it still a custom knife if you use a premade blade? I love the woodworking aspect of it, but making my own blades is just no fun for me. Is it still a custom knife if I use a premade blade?

Not really, in the sense that we usually mean that term. But, if someone were to pick out that blade and then select a particular handle and ask you to assemble it that way it would be 'custom' in that sense.

The important thing, as we see it and have discussed at length many times, is that you make it very clear to the purchaser that you assembled the knife but you didn't make the blade. Maybe the best term for that would be a 'customized' knife. You may get varying opinions on this as this thread gets answered by others but, again, the most important part is total disclosure so that your customer knows exactly what you're offering ...

a custom 'assembled' knife maybe............definitely not a custom 'made' knife.......
that said there are many out there in the knife world that do exactly what your asking and call themselves 'knifemakers' ..........that's why this topic gets many 'actual' knifemakers fired up...........as Ray has said and many others in the past just be up front and do what you want and have fun doing it.........

look forward to some pics

Assembling a knife from a finished blade makes you a cutler and is more traditional than making the blade and finishing the knife. I would go with custom finished but not custom made.

in Scandinavia lots of people make knives that way have done for years and are called knifemakers they are making a knife out of a Blade and handle material

Blade smiths make blades

its all perspective

if its knife shaped/profiles but not ground its a blade Blank

if its ground and sharp its a blade (not a blank)

if its got a handle on it its a knife

Welcome to the world of knives, knifemakers, knife assemblers, blademakers, etc.!
Pigeon holing doesn't work anybetter here than it does anywhere else.
Bottom line is honesty, you cannot go wrong there.
