Where Can I Find 5/16" Steel
Looking for preferably 1095, but if not I'd settle for 1084, or W1 or W2, or even 5160 in 5/16" thicknesses. Any leads? Admiral Steel didn't have it last I checked. I'm open for suggestions.

Well, some of the truck springs I use are 5/16" in the center near the alignment hole. But, they taper slowly out to pretty thin in a few feet of length. I do have some 3/8" X 4" 5160 that Mike Garner gave me. I'd be glad to share some of that with you. I just finished cutting a 2' piece in half into knife stock for a whopper I'm forging up. How much and how wide do you need Dana?
Well, I'll back up here for a minute. I went out to the shop and found what's left of the spring I cut up for another project I'm working on and found a piece of 5/16" truck spring that's an even thickness for 10". It's 2 1/2" wide. Will that work? Let me know and I'll trim it up and get it in the mail tomorrow. I might need your address if you decide it'll work. It'll need straightening since it was a curved leaf spring in it's first life. Let me know buddy. |

I just got a shipment of steel in yesterday from Security Steel. They were great to deal with. 1" x 5/16" x 20' 5160 $21.84. They do charge to cut the steel into UPS shippable length. They dont do credit cards but they do C.O.D.. They carry 1084 also. Got a 20' x 1" x 3/16 piece for $17.66. I plan on playing with some tonight so I'll give a report tomorrow on how it checks out.

Lindquist Tool Steel; 800/845-7052. You want to talk to Carol Henry. SCarolina steel company, warhouse is in Ohio (I *think*) Meanwhile, squash a piece of that 3/4" W-2 round bar of mine and use that .... Okay? Trish |

I got some 5/16ths 1065 from Pacific Steel a long time ago... I think it was Pacific anyway. They had a good stock of all the 10x series steels. That's what I've been using on the bushes.

Yep, Richard, it's W-2. Odd shapes and sizes but going cheap. Probably NOS, 10-12 years old.
Round bar I have (that Dana has at the moment) is also W-2 and yeah, I'm sure of it. My father had some, labeled from the steel mill and everything .... never know what you'll find stashed away in a machinist's basement. Also helps that he worked in the 44" (hot roll) plant as a machinist for 40+yrs .... Give Lindquist a call .... share the joy.... *g* Trish |

Ok Dana. Is that a suitable dimension for you bro? I'll tell you what I'll do. I'll leave it like it is and let you trim it for yourself. It's only about 12 1/2" long. You could do like me and use the narrowing end for the distal taper. It works out really great. Get back to me soon so I'll know what to do. I can trim it down to the 10" length in a few minutes. It's really no bother. It's just whatever you want me to do. That's what I'll do. Let me know buddy. Otherwise I'll send it to you like it is. I have your address after all
EDITED TO ADD: Oh yeah, don't worry about getting me back. I'm glad to do it dude. I believe that what goes around comes around. You know the drill Dana. Don't worry about it. Although I would enjoy a pic of the knife you forge from it. That would be a great honor to behold. You just can't miss with 5160. One of my favorites. Heading your way tomorrow one way or the other.
