Soldered or brazed.

If I recall correctly, Lile's hollow handle knives had a short tang that had 1/4" threads. The blade was from 1/4" stock and the tang was cut down to only 1/4" wide, rounded, then threaded. The handle tube had a plug at the front that had a matching 1/4" threaded hole. It was screwed onto the tang and sweat soldered in place in much the same manner as copper plumbing. You can figure the length of the tang by measuring the depth of the cavity in the handle, but I believe it was around 1" to 1 1/4" long.

Hey britt,

I don't know about the knife your talkin' about or jimmy lile for that matter. No disrespect intended, just never kept up with other makers. But I do know what sweating something on means to mechanics and metal workers.

It simply means that if you have something, say a bearing, that needs to go on an axle, you heat up the bearing race with a torch...it expands and drops right over the seat.

The guys may be right about the soldering on a threaded hilt, but I suspect he was talking about sweating on the bolster to make a press fit go on easier. Then using a threaded hilt to hold the handle on. At least that's what I do to my through tang knives.

chiger,

I have examined a few Lile Rambo series knives. After threading the first part of the handle to the blade it looked like the were soldered sweating the solder in to the threads. This locked the handle and kept it from coming unscrewed.
