The toughest black finish I know of is Boron Nitride. You would need to find a company (Google, Yellow Pages) to do that for you, it's not an easy home brew process.
Brownell's sells a product called Moly Kote. You can spray this product on your blade like spray paint, then bake it in your oven at 300 F for an hour and you have a fairly durable black finish. Moly Kote comes in glossy black or matte black as well as several colors ...

Or you can just coat it in some sort of vegetable or animal fat and bake it at 300F and get a similar coating.......
Now if you are after a DIY coating that is going to stand up to some punishment, look into doing a home-brew parkerization, it's similar to bluing, but much more robust, and doable as a home chemist. Even though it's commonly used on firearms it should do what you want it to, and there are several different additives for making it that nice blue/black finish.

Several things come to mind.
A weakened muratic acid dip.
or
you can take heated blade and rub it with toilet bowl wax. I don't think I would use an old used wax ring...Smile

Boron Nitride is the hardest coating that I know of that can be put on a blade. You said you wanted tough, that's the toughest there is. There was a Buck knife, Night something or other, that used it. But, like I said, you'd need to find a place that could do that for you. I don't think there's any way to do that one at home....

I suppose it would if you left it in for awhile. I would do some brief dips until I got the coating I wanted. Be sure you use protective gear. Acid is nothing to play with. I used to have a recipe from a buddy of mine, but I have seemed to have misplaced it.

He did say 'weakened' acid, not full strength. Or, you could use ferric chloride - that's just circuit board etchant, mix it one part FeCl to 3 parts distilled water. That's what most of us use to etch damascus. It will turn 1084 pretty much black, most other carbon steels will get dark grey. Or, even vinegar will darken a carbon blade although it works very slowly....

About like this:
Same process, just not going to be as robust as some of the others out there.

Brownells has something called gun kote that has a epoxie resen in it and you spray it on and bake it . It is very tuff and I have used it on knives and guns before. Brownells has been back ordered on the aresol cans of this stuff so I did some checking and K&G industries is the supplier for this spray paint and they are cheaper but they only have it in cans of paint you have to have a sprayer to apply it.
The tuffest spray and bake is ceracoat it is almost 10 times tuffer than the rest. Check it out on the net.
This stuff is bad ass. I will be spraying this stuff next!!!!

Yup, lard will work fine, just don't go above 300F if you can help it. Like I said, it's not going to be robust as many of the other coatings out there, but it will do for slowing/stopping rust and you get that black look you're after.
Do a couple tests on similar pieces of metal to make sure you're going to get the finish you desire.
