Got some knives done and some stitches.
2 light weight hunters.
Survival knife. And the one that bit me while sharpening. Forged from 5160. A camp knife or chopper. Don't look at the pictures below if you are squeamish. It's not too bad but ugly. Lol I did something you should never do and I'm only posting it as a reminder to be careful. I was sharpening on the wicked edge and in a hurry cause I had to get to work. Was almost done. And slipped and ran the side of my thumb the full length of the curved point. Not horribly bad. But I'll have to wear a splint for a few days and that will make it hard to make knives. Don't look below if you don't like blood. |

Owie, you big dummy! Momma's not gonna let you play in the garage anymore, you keep that up. Sure you got an earful. Neat scar to scare the grandkids with, though.
Learn how to do all your sharpening on your belt grinder, quicker and believe it or not, safer. __________________ Carl Rechsteiner, Bladesmith Georgia Custom Knifemakers Guild, Charter Member Knifemakers Guild, voting member Registered Master Artist - GA Council for the Arts C Rex Custom Knives Blade Show Table 6-H |

I know you are supposed to test your blades but I am really hoping this is not what they meant !!

I did something similar when I forgot that I was dealing with a double edged blade. I didn't need stitches but it had plenty of potential for doing damage. It did, however, teach me to pat attention to the edge of the blade while handling it.
Doug Oh, and by the way, those are nice looking knives you did there. __________________ If you're not making mistakes then you're not trying hard enough |

Just adding a bit of levity, based on past experience.
Getting cut like that is not fun or funny, but we've either been there are or headed that way in this game, just like Rob said. We work with a lot with some serious potential dangers. Due diligence to safety is a must. The learning curve will get tougher with fewer digits for sure. I've taken to locking the shop door when working with certain tools or doing certain tasks and always forge facing the normal approach across the back yard when possible. Still, can't really blame screwing up on someone else.....we should be in control at all times. That one looks like it got a bit past the superglue and duct tape remedy (at least for me). Here's to a fast healing Ricky. You know that's gonna hurt for a while every time you wash dishes or the dog. __________________ Carl Rechsteiner, Bladesmith Georgia Custom Knifemakers Guild, Charter Member Knifemakers Guild, voting member Registered Master Artist - GA Council for the Arts C Rex Custom Knives Blade Show Table 6-H |
