handle finish
I wanted to ask what type of finish can be used that still has a wood feel but is durable and non yellow. Tia mentioning frankensence (sp) but I can not get it to disolve.
I have tried Burchwood Casey tru oil, works great but does not leave a wood feel. Tried watcos oil but find that it yellows the maple wood. Tried some waxes, but not car wax, but they do not seem to last if they get wet. I have this maple handle with basic wax on it which keeps the color well but not very long lasting. I made my own wax out of a stick carnuba and bees wax melted together. Any ideas or things to try would be great. I do not think I have enough nose and ear wax to get the whole thing coated. I have a blend of bee's wax, acetone, and Danish oil someone sold me on a few years ago. It seemed to work pretty good.
I also like straight tung oil in several coats, drying in between them. I follow that with a buff and Ren wax over the whole knife. I admit--it's been a while since I used anything that needed a finish since I use mostly stabilized stuff now, but I still have a lot of natural wood and this is how I'll finish it. __________________ Andy Garrett https://www.facebook.com/GarrettKnives?ref=hl Charter Member - Kansas Custom Knifemaker's Association www.kansasknives.org "Drawing your knife from its sheath and using it in the presence of others should be an event complete with oos, ahhs, and questions." |
