attaching handle to blade

this is my first attempt at attaching the handle and spacer material to the blade without
having a guard to butt it up to. My question is should I cut sand and finish the handle material first then attach it to the tang ?? and hope it lines up ? or is there a way to attach it
to the tang and then finish it without scratching the blade?

If I understand your question correctly, what yo need to do is rough shape your handle and then finish the front edge of the handle material where it would scratch the blade to work on it. The handle portions around the outside of the tang can be done later but that front edge needs to be done before attachment.
Hope that helps
Steve

You can also put heavy blue masking tape on the blade to help protect it from scratches. Basically though, do what Steve said and finish the part of the handle at the front because that part cannot be done after the handle is on the knife (without considerable risk of scratching the blade). The rest of the handle can be shaped and finished after the glue dries...
