Need help with wire type
Hi, guys. Been doing many projects but not knives at the moment. What I need to make is a wire basket dog muzzle. About the dia. & stiffness of a good coat hanger. It needs to take solder or spot weld if I had to. None galvenized. I thought of nickle/silver or med steel wire. The pics of muzzles show shinny wire or say chrome but it looks like paint. I also thought of bending 10-12 guage solid rods. But I think their stainless and I have no experence w/ it. I could use galvanized and clean it off at the welds.
Anyone have any suggestions?

Hi Lee, nice to see you back.
If you're only going to make one then why not use coat hangers if that is the stiffness you want? Or, you could use baling wire, sometimes called black iron wire. It comes in many diameters - usually thinner than coat hangers in the hardware stores but they can order it much heavier than that.
If you want fancy wire check Rio Grande Jeweler's supply. Expensive, but they have all kinds of jewelers wire.
Or, find a Michael's or other hobby shop. They have all types of craft materials.
Welding rods should work too....

I like to use high tinsel fence wire for some of my projects. It is strong and can be hardened to an extent. Ed

Thanks. U would think finding heavy gauge wire would be as easy as running to a hardware store. Everything I find is to soft. I think I 'll heat treat a few different types and see what I get.

A bit late here but what about piano wire. It is found easily at hobby shops in various sizes. It is 1095 and can be heat treated. It can be bent into just about any shape to make a dog muzzle. It can be welded and brazed also. Much stiffer than bailing wire or even coat hangers.

What about stainless filler wire for welding. I get 3/32 stainless that I think is 308 stainless that I use for pin material. I also get it in 1/16 size.
