Question A question about blade centermarks

I have been scribing a line with the same thickness drill bit. Is there an easier way to get a better mark? Right now I have to "paint" the edge with a marker then scribe a line, Anyone have a better way?

Invest in a carbide tipped scribe. They are adjustable for the blade thickness and hard enough to scribe just about anything. The line is cut deep enough that coloring the edge isn't necessary but sometimes I'll use Dychem on it anyway.

Here's a picture of mine:

The big one I made for jobs larger than knife edges, the little one is the one I use for most everything for the last 20 years. I think usakinfemakers has one like that. I use spark plug gauges to set the distance for the point after I measure the thickness of the edge ...

It is better to lay out two parallel lines spaced to the edge thickness you want, then grind a 45? to and away from them. Do this on a flat surface using any thing that will scribe and can be locked in position. Scribe one line, flip the blank over, do the second. Then you grind the main bevels until the 45? is gone.

I use a drill bit slightly smaller than the thickness of the blank, then coat the edge with a black sharpie.

Then clamp the bit to a flat surface and drag the blade across it in one direction than again the other way.

Works every time.

same here Kevster, although I was using the same size bit, flipping the blade, marking again and splitting the difference if there was one.

Here is a type of scribe I made and use. The base is 1/4" brass. A 1/8" hardened drill rod is installed and locks in place with 4/40 screw. The point is ground so that it is on one side as a hypodermic needle is. The screw is loosened, the scribe is turned to the desired position and locked in place. The scribing is done on a flat surface just as you are already doing. Oops. That is one I bought years ago rather than the one I made which is much the same.
