Hey, Alex! What's up with the spam invasion?
I know you're busy, but can't you give the mods some board-wide anti-spammer powers? This is getting ridiculous...

Hi Alan,
He has, and I've been deleting every time I log in, but I'm often away. Pesky sumaguns, eh? Coop |

I'm at a loss for what to do, other than to remove the spam posts and ban the user. We have it set up now so that anyone can post, once they successfully register. The only long range options that I can come up with are to moderate every new member registration, or to put a 24 hour cool-down window on all new registrations. I've asked a few guys their opinion on the 24 hour window, and they think that it's too inconvenient for today's instant gratification world.
I'm for anything to stop spamming. I'm also a big enemy of hackers, crackers and intellectual idea/content thieves. Luckily there aren't that many in the knife industry! Most knife people are good, honest folks. I'm of the mind that we should come up with as many ideas as possible, then put them up to a poll vote. Thanks Alex, and Coop!
I like the idea of doing a poll. I don't think a 24-hour cooldown would work, the autobots would just start up 24 hours after registration. It's too bad we can't just get their home addresses and arrange for some large gentlemen with big sticks to pay a little visit expressing our extreme displeasure at spam... I do appreciate the work, guys! |

The only other thing that I can come up with is to give some moderator priviledges to some more of us so the posts get deleted quicker.
Approving each new member is a good way to help control it but then you would just about need someone able to review new requests very quickly to keep from running them away. Good luck Alex with it, let me know if I can ever help out. |

Here's a suggestion. Don't know if it will work or not.
For new members to the forum set a number of posts maybe 2 to 4 that would have to be approved by one of the moderators before it is put up on the forum. After that open it up for them to post at will. It shouldn't take to long for a moderator to check out the post and put it up on the forum. Mike Zima www.zimaknives.com |

Possibly not being able to post pictures or Links for your first 2-5 posts
If there was a way to deny a post based on how many times the "$" was used. That may stop some. Most I've seen lately have a price list in them we even got them posting in the chat bar for the Tuesday night chat sessions. How do you report them when they do that? It's been getting to where I see something every day now. I report them but man are they persistant |

New spam rules in place. I'd post the idea here, but I don't want the spammers to know what I did. We'll know if it works or not in about a week.
Please e-mail me directly if you see a new spam post. Alex __________________ Alex Whetsell [======]~~~~~~~> Atlantavirtual.com Atlanta NOC |

Apparently it's worked REALLY well. I haven't seen a single SPAM since you instituted your change.
Thanks. Good to go! Coop |
