Elephant knife engraving by Barry Lee Hands
John B. told me about this place. My photo is of a knife with a standing cow elephant on one side and a charging bull on the other.
There is a lot of interesting work on this site, Thanks John. |

Welcome aboard Barry! Glad to have you with us.
I like this piece alot. The white to black background is an interesting effect. Does the depth[relief] change as you move from the scene to the body of the scroll? Great work, and thanks for showing it. Tim __________________ http://www.adlamengraving.com |

Thanks Tim, yes, good question, the background around the Arabesque leaf was relieved with a chisel, then punched flat and stippled.

Hi Kerry,
I am glad you like my work, I hope we meet. I don't get over to Fega except to visit usually, but that weekend I will be in Reno at SCI booth 3206, Barry Lee Hands, Master Engraver, in the SCI directory. I used to exhibit fega also to support the show but got flack from some members for not being there much because I was at SCI most of the day, so now I just do SCI. I do try to make the acgg/fega banquet as I am a fega member with pro status(when my dues are paid) and a member of ACGG (when my dues are paid),two fine orginizations. Thanks, Barry |

Barry, I'm glad John B. pointed you this way. You'll like it here.
I first picked up on this forum when I heard about the possibility of a the beginning of a new guild called (I believe) "The International Association of Engraving Arts". There was some activity here about it, but looks like it it hasn't happened yet. Since this forum is about knifemaking, a few of us gun scratchers are sneaking in our thoughts (and occaisional pictures). Feel free to share some of your ideas and techniques with these folks. (By the way..........I am planning on doing a "Pimp My Gun" article and see if I can sell it to some magazine.) |

Thanks Barry,
I kinda picked up the scroll style from Bill Gamradt..........too bad it isn't as good as his. It reminds me of a modified Lynton McKenzie.........but for me, Gamradt's is a bit easier to execute. I had some fun with the "In N Out"..........boy,you sure gotta pay attention when you're doing it or it can become a real headache. |

I would also like to extend my welcome to this forum. Nice to have another gun engraver here. Back when I was the head engraver at Smith&Wesson, we were looking for another engraver and tried out one of your students. He was not given a fair chance to prove his capabilities. He was handed a hefty job consisting of about 75% coverage with several gold inlays and needless to say a model 500, one of the hardest guns to cut ,material wise. He did not work out, cause he ended up scraping out a BBl. from going to deep for gold bands. I thought he had alot of potential. Anyways welcome to the forum
