Yes, Don, it's like your others but better since it's a liner lock. I bet you to it in one of your "everybody make one" events. Mine had the gold lip pearl and went to my wife. Good stuff, Don !!!!! Frank

Don, Super job on your new folder. Like joe said you might have a problem keeping it in your pocket. Seem that every time I make one for myself someone always wants to pay top dollar for it. They don't want to wait for me to make one for them they want that one.

Thanks, guys.
Joe, Curtis, "a bird in the hand...." Frank, yes, I remember your barlow. It was absolutely gorgeous! Bet it's still in your wife's purse. My Mom has a Texas Toothpick in her purse. I'm out of good scale materials. The MOP on this one was mismatched in thickness. One side was only 1/16" thick, so I had to grind the other down to match. I ground it while mounted on the knife. Fortunately I didn't grind thru the nacre. I have one more set of absolutely stunning black lip MOP that's the same way. One piece is about 0.050" while the other is almost 1/8" Even so, the price for the set years ago was $79.00. I hate to find out what it costs now. I'm in the market for a couple of sets of gold and/or black lip. Guess I'll start looking for it. Do you think I can mill the back side of the thick black lip down to match the other if I first mill the sides parallel, then l place them in my vise on parallels? I've done this with ivory and bone before, leaving a thin edge on each side unmilled. I've never had any success using a disk grinder to thin scales. I hate to risk grinding the outside. I'm afraid it would go thru the nacre. Last edited by Don Robinson; 03-20-2010 at 10:34 AM. |

Well Don,
I have always only had my belt grinder to work with, and like you I go for the bottom . After a sharp 60 or 12o I go to the granite table with a 120 taped on it. Then a few strokes on a 220 on the same table (it's a huge one) and I'm set to go. I use this same meathod for blades and back bars as well. Rectangles are reasonable to keep even ; triangular shaped pieces can be tough to do. If you find the b lack lip at a reasonable price please let us know. I have a few smaller sets left of the Haitan type. They tend to be brown and not hewavy multicoloured . Lovely knives as always Don !!!! __________________ Without collectors there would not be makers. |

Very nice Don! I have yet to try a liner lock barlow. I have the plans sitting here along with a few others from you. I really need to get at it!
Thanks for sharing Kirby |

Kirby, try a barlow. There's just something about them... specially for old men. And you used to worry about cutting yourself while closing. Not so for these.
Frank, I got a set of black lip and a set of gold lip from our friend Tracy at http://www.usaknifemaker.com/store/ |

I like the color you were able to get on the bolsters. Good luck holding onto that one. I agree with Joe and Curtis, someone is going to try to buy it from you. Craig |

Yeah, Gil, I've made lots of these that sold to other people, but this one is mine!
I made my first barlow years ago when a collector who had over 200 barlows brought me his favorite and asked if I could make one like it. I told him yes, I can, but it will lock open and won't spring closed against your fingers. The rest, as they say, is history. Well, maybe just a little..... |

Don, this one was supposed to be mine as well but it ended up overseas but I have another one in the shop now, I just hope this time I can hold on to it.
