Well then, if laguiole uses that system then it already has a name. I've never dis-assembled one of their knives but I have handled some and I couldn't tell any difference in the way it felt compared to any other slip joint. In other words, it wasn't any harder to close and my fingers weren't in any more danger as far as I could tell. That might mean that this system could be more difficult to implement without offering much additional security....

Having carried lock backs for many years I see some merit in this design from the standpoint of safety when carried closed. I have seen weak springs after years of use that allowed the blade to portrude from the shrouding of the handle when closed.(mind you this was with commercial over the counter knives).
Making it dangerous to carry in a pocket or when reaching into a pocket. I have a drawer full, put away for this reason. Being locked in the closed position, seems safer. Very interesting! |
