Heat Treating
Well I made a replacement blade for a CRKT Journeyer. I decided to do an all out test on my new blade and did the normalizations(critical temp/cooled to room temp, heated to just red but still magnetic/ cooled to RT, heated to a dull red and cooled to RT), heated to critical non-magnetic and did an edge quench on about half the blade and let cool to room temp, then I propped the blade in a pan of water with about a 1/3 up the blade and tempered (with a torch) to a blue/wheat color on the spine and almost to the water line with the wheat color. And allowed to cool to room temp. After this I clamped it in a vise and smacked it 3 good times with a hammer with no breakage or cracking. I then dropped it point down on concrete, inspected and all looked fine minus a few scratches. Would you consider this a successful heat treatment?

Sounds good to me. The only other tests would be edge retention and/or the brass rod test.

Most likely. Finish shaping the blade and sharpen it. Then do the brass rod test on it. If it passes that then it sounds OK to me ...

What is a brass rod test? Never mind just you tubed it. I will try that out tomorrow and will report back.

Brass rod test passed and I have been using it all week cutting bags and cardboard at work. Still sharp and no shiny spots on the cutting edge.
