HT oven seal

Just about finished building an electric HT oven. So far its all wired up and I fired it up for the first time last night, works great, no big sparks and nothing blew up so all is well.
Now the problem is I need a length of ceramic braid for the door seal ( don't ask why, its a design issue ). And all I can find is manufactures that deal in large amounts , only need two feet so its a bit of a problem. Does anyone know of a source for ceramic braid in small amount .

Thanks Sam

Sure, any hardware store that sells wood stoves. If you have none of that around your area I would be truly surprised if you can't find it on eBay. It is sold in small packages, just enough to go around the door of a wood stove (which is close to twice as much as you need but affordable anyway) .

P.S.

I just searched eBay for 'stove door seal' and found lots of it, roughly $20 for 10ft or so in various sizes ....

Yeah I've found the fiberglass stuff but its only good for 1000?f. I'll need a bit more than that. I've got some fiberglass seal that I got at the local hardware store and I may try it if I can't find any ceramic rope or braid. The ceramic stuff is supposed to take 2100? to 2300?f if I'm remembering right.

If you can find better stuff go for it. But, a wood stove gets well over 1500 if you push it like I have to and the stove and the rope lasts for years. Or, you might try good old Inswool like we line forge bodies with. My electric furnace door fits pretty close but there are gaps. I fill the gaps with Inswool and that works just fine ...

Thanks ray the inswool is probably what I'm looking for. But I may go ahead and try what I have and see if it works.
If I could figure out how to post pictures I would put a couple on so you could see what I've built. Its not as fancy as a boughten kiln but I can control the temp and it was a lot cheaper.

To post pictures use the Go Advanced button instead of the Post Quick Reply. Then, look for the Manage Attachments button and follow the prompts it provides...

I am getting an error message says my file size is to big. I have managed to upload pictures to an album on my profile , so I'm getting there.
Redstick My HT kiln is a little smaller than most of the boughten one but not much. Its 6.5" wide 4.5" high and 15.5" deep inside. I think I spent around $400 to build it. Its pretty simple but you do need at least a little electrical experience or an electrition friend.
If you have any questions I will be glad to answer if I can.

Hopefully I can get some pictures on here shortly.

Sam

There are many free programs on the internet that will resize a photograph. That will fix your uploading problem. If you're taking pictures with a phone that usually produces enormous files, pictures that measure 30x20 inches or similar, ridiculous sizes. Resize to 8x6 or so and you'll be fine ..

If it works as good as it looks it will be a terrific tool for your shop ...

Thanks Ray. I think it will, so far I've only had it up to 801?c but once I get the door sealed up I'm going to try going higher although I don't have any plans to work with a steel that needs a higher temp.... Anyway its way better than the ceramic kiln I was using.

Hi Sam,

Looks like a great tool!

I fitted the door bricks to the face of the oven by careful sanding with a long flat board. Hopefully you can get it to seal pretty well. Mine routinely gets near 1100?C (2000?F) with a 2100 Watt element.
