Kydex Sheath

I am in the process of making a knife for a rancher and was talking to him about possibly using a kydex sheath that is turned parallel with the belt. I have 2 reasons for the kydex idea,1- I think it can be rinsed off & out after use (cutting bull calves) w/o ruining the sheath, and he wants to try the sheath but won't use one that rides vertically while on horseback, and I do understand this!! I would also like to have the handle lightly snap into the sheath so it can be pulled out w/o having to undo a belt snap around the handle, and can be easily returned to the sheath,(bawling calves and all . Anyway, I don't have the materials or experience to do Kydex and would like to have someone make the sheath when I get the knife finished. Am I expecting too much from the kydex and if not could someone that might be interested in doing this for me give me a general ballpark figure on the price for it. The dimensions I am shooting for on the knife are about a 2 1/2- 3" blade and about 6-8" overall. If anyone would be interested in doing this sheath for me you can e-mail me @msader@hotmail.com, Thanks, Mike Sader

Sorry ...

I'm not offering to do the sheath (I'm in Australia), but I do work with Kydex and your expectations of the sheath are more than reasonable. In fact, those qualities you are after are the exact reasons a lot of folk like to use Kydex. It can sometimes be related to the design of the knife but an expereinced maker can factor that into the sheath design. Horizontal carry should be no problem.

There are quite a number of specialty Kydex sheath makers in the USA who do sheaths for custom knifemakers. Names like River City Sheaths, On/Scene Tactical ... I don't have their website details but if you look up those names I'm sure they'll pop up on your search engine.

Also a few keen knifemakers could helop out too. I'll let them respond to your post !

Cheers. Jason.
