Little Chopper......

This little ax was a big challenge to say the least. I started out with a piece of W-2 that was 1/2 X 1 1/2 X 4 1/2". The first step was drilling fifteen 1/8" holes and then cleaning it up with a carbide burr to get my slot for the eye. This was done on my drill press. Actually the forging was pretty simple but when it came time to drift the eye my plan went south pretty fast. I was hoping I could use a round drift and it would spred the slot and everything would be all straight and true. I let it set for a week or two before I came up with another idea. I was thinking I would have to make a special drift but got by with my tomahawk drift and I was able to straighten it out. Making the haft was a major time consummer but all and all I was really pleased with the end result. The head is 5 3/4" and the cutting edges are 2 1/2" each. The haft is 15" made from some oak that Bruce Evans's had given me when he was out west a couple years ago.

Dang I like that one a lot Ray. I have been thinking of making a double bit of some sort as well, now perhaps I have the inspiration to go do it. That is one sweet little axe bro.
