Amber spacer
I was thinking of using a amber spacer in a Bowie I have planned
I'm kinda nervous about using it. It looks like it would melt if ground and polished next to a brass or silver spacer? should I use leather next to it or is standard spacer material sufficient. Thanks for your help Kevin __________________ Holopaw Forge |

I used amber once next to aluminum (which is soft like brass) and didn't have any problem. They were both ground and shaped at the same time but polished separately. The amber would wear away more quickly than the metal if you allowed it to so I used heavy masking tape to protect the amber while I polished the brass with a stiffer wheel and a metal polishing compound. Then, mask the brass and polish the amber with a softer wheel and a fine, softer compound .....

Amber is tree resin, it's soft and will not take heat. And stress will make it crack like glass, sort of a arc type inclusion.
Ray is right on how to work with it. Howard |
