logo etch onto damascus
I have just recently started to use damascus for some of my knives and now that they are finished I want to etch my name onto them. How do you do this with a damascus blade? I am using thunderforge damascus (see the display case) and can't see how the etch would even show up.

Use finger nail polish befor etching to prevent etching in the area where the logo will go. Gib

Yep. That's what I do.
If you've already etched the blade, you can go over it with some 000 steel wool. That will polish it up a bit. Then mask the area where your logo will go with nail polish and re-etch back to the final contrast. Remove the nail polish to find the area of lower contrast where your logo will go. -Frank J Warner __________________ --Frank J Warner Happiness is tight gibs and a flat platen. http://www.franksknives.com/ |

Logo etch
Steve my logo has an oval line surrounding it. The oval line makes for a good border to use when applying the nail polish to the logo for masking. I generally put about a 10 second etch to the blade, clean, etch the logo, mask the logo w/ nail polish, then do the standard etch to the point a fingernail just starts to hang on the design. After cleaning off the nail polish that 10 second etch will barely show the pattern in the background of the etch versus the rest of the blade etch. Makes an interesting etch I think. But then what do I know????
