In Progress Sword
Hey All,
I thought I might post some of the in progress shots of a sword I'm working on. It's going to be a Peterson type L with a pattern welded blade. Here's a shot of one of the core billets: Here are the cores welded, drawn and twisted: This is the sword with the cores and edges welded on. The tang and tip still need welded. Here is the tip welded. I cut a V into the the end, then forged the to "ear"s together, and welded. This is a period technique, and one that I find to be much more technical to the edge wrap style. Here is the scarf joint for the tang, about to be closed. This is the blade as forged. All I did was forge the bevels, I wanted to get a nice blodida/blodvarp pattern in the fuller, so I ground it in. Here is a shot of the pattern. This was still at 80 grit hand sanding, so I had a hard time getting it to show up. That's all for now! Last edited by Jesse Frank; 12-27-2005 at 08:08 AM. |

Nice proportions & taper!
I'm in the middle of an L-type now, too - not pattern-welded, so yours is already more cool Which L hilt are you going for, and what are you planning to do with it? |

Thanks Jeff!
I gonna do the "Witham" style, if you know what I mean... The one on Pg 77 pf Pieces book... gonna do the silver overlay with copper diamonds, similar to that one. I might end up doing the wire inlay thing with the silver and solder on the diamonds... we'll see what ends up being easiest |

I'm leaning towards the Thames one, page 80, due to the pommel shape, but I really like the clean & sharp fuller of the Leutlrit. Do the wire inlay, and then solder on the diamonds? I think you'd best try that out on a scrap bit, sounds risky to me! I don't have any good photos of that hilt, but if they did it like a lot of the others, the smith probably just switched back and forth between silver and copper wire to get the diamond effect - if you cut the wires at an angle, you can get clean diagonals - I haven't gotten them as clean as those diamonds seem to be, though. I look forward to hearing about your solution! Jeff |

Yeah, that's today.... more experimenting. it appears in the photo that it might be a solid overlay.... I havent had much luck with copper on that front, yet.... I was thinking to solder the copper on first, then go at it with the silver. We'll see.
Dude, you gotta post the pics for the one you're working on... I've got another type L, like the one on pg 76 to do almost right after this one. First I have to get another Behmer 4ish completed... that one should turn out OK, I hope.... holy cow, it only takes a few orders to make you feel like there's no end in sight |
