Question Casting

Hello All,
I am currently making a new dress sgian dubh and had a question about casting guards and pommels. I would like to use silver solder to cast with or maybe a lower temp solder and wanted to know how to do it. I searched but could not find any good info. I got the idea from a jeweler/knifemaker but I can't remember his name to hunt him down. I think he metioned wax as a mold but I am not sure. Any ideas? Thanks.

It sounds like you are talking about lost wax casting.

A couple of points.

Solder is not what you want to cast with. Brass, bronze, and nickle silver are better materials. All of these are copper alloys. Pewter is also an option.

You make a wax original. Then you sprue it up and place it in a can. You then pour investment paster around it and let it cure. You bake the plaster mold and burn off the wax. leaving a cavity the you then fill it with molten metal via sprue holes. Once the metal in hard, break the plaster mold and you are done, except for clean-up work.

That in nut shell is how it works. However, that is a basic summary only! Entire books have been written on this topic. Take a class at your local J.C. and learn to it right (IE: safely) Or learn from someone that does this in your area. I learned from my dad, he learned from our local J.C.

Tim McCreight's "Practical Casting," is a great intro and offers many different levels of involvement in casting information. Anyone intersted in casting should check it out / buy it. You can definitely get it from Amazon or any of the chain bookstores.
