seax in-works

Well, we finally closed on our new house and are in the process of moving/renovating...and all the other "fun" stuff. My new shops not up yet, so I've been messing more with my pages. Here's one for a pattern welded seax I'm making for someone.

It's been heat treated already and etched a bit. The pattern is coming out really neat. I used some new 1084 and an old lumberjack tree saw that was supposed to be 15N20. The blade has swirled dark-grey/medium grey (~200+ layers) from this mix. It acted more like an air hardening mix when hammering and grinding. The undelying mix is bright "white"/medium grey from the 1050/1095 and only about 24 layers. The middle is pure 1084 for a "san-mai" style and adds to the overall pattern. I hope to get some more pics up this weekend with the patterns visible.

Looking good Don. I really like the drawing too, it's good to see the thinking behind the knife. It certainly looks like something one of our ancestors would have been proud to carry 1,000 years or so ago.

The birdseye pattern will look really nice in the finished piece. I like the way you show the process on the your web site. I don't think a birdseye pattern has been shown that way before on the net.

And of course you got to love a nice seax blade profile.
