Why antic knives have a ring on the end of the handle?
A lot of antic knifes found in Russia have hammered steel ring as the end of the handle.
Does anybody have idea what it is for? My bet is to put stick in it to have kind of drill. It is not just for hanging on a belt - it may be resolved easyer then hammering it out. Thanks, Vassili. __________________ nozh2002 |

Just a guess:
As some antic swords have disks as the end of the handle, maybe the rings are just "lightened" discs? Same gripsecurity but less weight? ?? edit: sorry just saw this is the makers arena, schouldnt post here Last edited by bigbore; 05-31-2003 at 02:43 PM. |

Bigbore,
You don't have to be a maker to post in the Maker's Forums. The designation really only exists to categorize the various Forums. Your input is definitely welcome. ...Now I'd like to see a picture of an 'antic,' blade. At first I thought it was 'arctic,' but that isn't right either. What is an antic blade? |

Threw me a curve at first too.
Tell me about it! I've been fighting a Sinus/Ear Infection for 3 weeks - finally broke done and got some antibiotics. Starting to feel better, but now I'm working on one of those projects from hell and nothing wants to go right. __________________ Chuck Burrows Hand Crafted Leather & Frontier Knives dba Wild Rose Trading Co Durango, CO chuck@wrtcleather.com www.wrtcleather.com The beautiful sheaths created for storing the knife elevate the knife one step higher. Good guess Bigbore. But now: Why they need the disk there? Simbol of Sun?
Thanks, Vassili. __________________ nozh2002 |

@Vassili: have to guess again, but IMO:
FIRST a disc is a good and ergonomic way of making a slipstop at the end of a heavy sword with a thin handle and SECOND its a good place for a symbol or something. But remember i`m not a expert, just guessing - maybe the need for a symbol was first and the gripshape second? And: thanks for the welcome gentlemen |

Just found an answer - the reason for ring is that at that time they did not know how to make long blades etc. In short-mediun distance they throwing a knife instead of stabing with long sword and need ring to tie it to wire for return. Same wire was used for strangling. And this is a mongolian tradition come from bronze age.
