New Forum Welcome
Welcome to the new CKD forum for the historically inspired blade...
In keeping with the Custom Knife Directory's goal of focusing on the Custom Knife this is a place to discuss the influence of historical designs and traditions on contemporary knives. We're hoping to see this forum develop into a resource for those of us who are particularly interested in researching the history of the Blade and reproducing either the aesthetics or the techniques of those who have paved the way for our Craft... |

Good start.
Alex, take a day off sometime this year! I'll see what I can find in the way of pictures from non-copyright sources for the new forum, things which might be helpful to people's research. Roger |

It's great to see this forum. Seeing as I work and play in that segment of the knife community that deals with historical reenactment/recreation, I am looking forward to a great deal of inspiration and knowledge to be gained from this forum.
Also a big congratulations to Jon as moderator of this new forum. Having seen Jon's posts and his work, I think he is the perfect choice for the job. So, everyone have fun, learn a lot and play nice __________________ Scott B. I would like to start making larger knives/ bowies, in the style of the late 1700's to early 1800's. Would someone please post some sites that would have some pics and histories of these earlier types of large knives.TIA!

Jon,
Ken has a very good question. Why don't you move it to a new thread so it can get the type of response it deserves. Ken, I'll check my sources tonight and post an answer tonight or tomorrow. __________________ Scott B. I love this new forum!
It' s only recently (a few years to some decennia),so much information can be shared so easily. The evolution of knives in the different corners of the world (I'm aware the world is not a flat square)has given very differend shapes, typical to the ethnic groups who used them and the recources they had. But it shows also similarities in form and function. Knives also show migrations of people over the world and influences of conquerers. Also in swords we see the differences: for example the Japanese swords vs. European swords . Which is best? It's not a definite answer: we have to compare the evolution of the swords and the armour they had to defeat at the same time!Forging techniques reached high levels in Europ too. So much possible subjects, worth discussing or explaining! Jan |
