stick tang?
I am very new to knife making and I was wandering about using stick tangs. I recently have been trying to make a stag handled knife. I drilled the hole for the tang in the handle and I was wanting to know the best way to stabilize the tang at the butt of the handle. Would bradding it work the best. I am using brass as the butt plate. Its all new to me....
thanks, brian |

Probly the best way to atach a but cap is to silver braze a split bolt to the tange, silver braze a nut to the inside of the but cap and just screw everything up tight. That is the toughest way.
I have on small light duty knives brazed a wood screw to the but cap and drilled a pilot hole and glued everything up. Don't know if you can do that, may have too much pith in the antler for a secure bond. One old way is run the tang all the way trough the but cap and pien the end. Anougther is to run the tang all the way through, and put an acorn nut on the outside of the butcap. Whatever you do don't just glue the but cap on, it will eventualy fall off. Hope this helps, William |

Butt cap
Brian, Here is another method if you dont braze. Get a coupler nut that is 1/4 x 20 thread(nut should be about 1 inch long, est.) and drill pin size hole thru it at the end. Then split nut half way thru so tang can fit in slot and drill pin size hole in end of tang. This will allow you to pin nut to tang. Then drill and tap butt cap and slip handle over tang and nut and screw together. Thanks to James Cook, mastersmith who taught me this trick at the ABS school in Washington , Ark. Hope this helps. If not clear, let me know if I can be of further help.

Thread the end of the tang and drill/tap a hole in the pommel cap (assuming it's thick enough) to fit the tang threads. Epoxy and screw it together.
