cure for ringing railroad track anvil
newbe here.
got myself some rr track for anvil but it rings real bad. Go to local hardware an get some great stuff, its expanding foam insulation in a can. Turn rr track on its side and fill it with the foam. repeat other side when the first one drys. Then I took a serrated bread knife"wife does not know yet" and trim it up. works great no ringing, just a kind of thud. Hope this helps someone. |

Be very careful, because most of that stuff says on the can that it is highly flammable, and if you're bringing a piece of red-hot metal to within a couple of inches of it...well, you do the math. Just don't want to see anyone get hurt.

I wrapped a log chain three times around the waist of my 110 harbor freight and it shut right up.

A trick from the smith at Centaur Forge:
tape a little bitty round refrigerator magnet to the very point of the horn on a regular anvil. it's amazing how much sound that knocks out. i couldn't believe it 'til i tried it. |

A somewhat less flammable way of deadening the track would be to take several visegrips and clamping them on the web of the track.

I collected a bunch of tire weights and melted them down (outside).
Formed up one side at a time after welding a few scrap lugs to the web. Poured the web full. After doing both sides, the rxr anvil more than doubled in mass/weight and does not ring. Makes for a much more efficient anvil with the extra mass. Non flammable too. Couple years ago a smith on the junkyard wrapped his anvil in foam rubba. deadened the sound.
Made a great unexpected blaze, for the smith. He decided it wasn't such a good idea after that. Bed the rail in silicone caulking or in a box of sand. __________________ NT Barkin Turtle Tribe ~~~Life is what it is~~~ |
