Rebirth of a Comet
Had a tooth pulled around 3 weeks ago. While waiting for the pain killer to start working knives became part of the conversation. I happend to mention leaf springs. To make a long story short he said he was rebuilding a 1964 Mecury Comet and that he had replaced the leaf springs and if I wanted them I could have them. I went and picked them up yesterday and took one rack appart and got a couple leaves straightend and annealed. This morning I cut off an 8" chunk and then cut it in half and had two 1 1/4" X 8" pieces. After about an hour and a half of hand forging I had the blade forged. Its got 10" of blade and its 15 1/2" tip to end of tang. The piece of steel below the blade is exactly the same size as what the blade was forged out of.

Ray has his mojo back and the hammers are swinging! Looks good Ray, I will be waiting to see it finished. It is too darn hot for me to be running the forge so I have been doing some machining and swage building.

Brent, We were at 100 yesterday and about the same today. I've got my anvil close to my large maple tree plus I've got a breeze. When the forge bug bites you got to feed it no matter what. Here's the big brother I just got done forging. Started with 1 1/2" wide piece of the Comet spring on this one. Blade is about 10 1/2" but considerably wider than the first knife. I may have a customer for this one that wants a forge finish. If not I'll finish like I normally do. |

You guys amaze me, Raymond. I don't think I could cut one out that neat with a band saw and you did it with HOT and HAMMER. Neat looking blades!

Mac, No I won't be doing BAKCA this year. It was real slow last year and I just can't justify taking a chance again this year. Sunday it was an absolute ghost town. Hope it works out for you!
