This is one of my better attempts at the vine pattern.

I really appreciate the art of filework, but I have always hesitated to do any that was not functional. Sometimes I feel that it can detract from the simple nature of a knife--which is the simplest of tools. There is a very notable maker whose work I have always admired and followed, but when he decides to do file work, he files from stem to stern, top, bottom, finger groove, choil, you name it. I think fine embellishment like this is best served in limited quantity, like make-up on a pretty girl. __________________ Andy Garrett https://www.facebook.com/GarrettKnives?ref=hl Charter Member - Kansas Custom Knifemaker's Association www.kansasknives.org "Drawing your knife from its sheath and using it in the presence of others should be an event complete with oos, ahhs, and questions." |

I totally agree with you Art when you say it is best served in limited quantity. I have never done any file work but i think you may have inspired me to just do it. I have a couple profiled blanks in the garage that I may have to try it out on. Hopefully I can get to it in the next couple days.

Andrew , I call this tire tread that is what it looks like to me .
PS: Myself for a custom knife I like some file work just like engraving , bolsters , guards , tapered tangs , jumping , fancy bolsters , fancy thong holes, and mosaic pins. But not all on the same knife . Why have a really plain knife if your going to buy a custom knife . |

Jumping? Is this a typo or a term I am unfamiliar with?
As for the rest..., I agree. Any form of embellishment is fine so long as it remains tasteful and does not enter the realm of 'gaudy'.

Andrew , in your other post with the picture of my knife it is the filework on the blade done with a checkering tool , so your finger or thumb will not slide on the top of the blade .

Ok. I've never tried a checkering tool before. I've used Dremel cut off wheels and a number of files to do that though.

Oh crap. I just realized i said Art in my previous post when I quoted about file work being best served in limited quantity. It was Andrew that said it which i still feel the same about that. Lol. Sorry about that. Art, you did motivate me to finally get ready to try some file work. Actually Art, your knives inspire me and I never get bored of looking at your pics.

Icho , that is ok I do thinks like that too.
File work is pretty easy it is doing the same thing over and over just put it on paper first You can get a checking file from Brown'll for about $27 and will last 27 years . |
